ORCHESTRATION

To me, the goal of orchestration is to take a composers vision and expand upon it to enhance the storytelling of the music while remaining true to the composers intent: All for the greater goal of creating musical cohesion through dramaturgical use of genre.

I am experienced in writing both original orchestrations for new work, and reducing full orchestrations to fit the needs of the theater. My work spans leading the orchestration of the largest student written musical in the country, to reducing full golden age scores into new styles.

I served as the lead orchestrator for the largest student written musical in the country. I created orchestrations from compositions written by over a dozen writers, spanning genres from pop, rock, and blues, to spy movie jazz ballads. I mentored the creation of three first-time orchestrators’ scores from first draft to finished work.

Reduction, 11 players

I was the lead orchestrator for Northwestern’s 80’s influenced cross-gender-cast production of Frank Loesser’s Pulitzer Prize winning musical. I reduced the original instrumentation from 25 players to 11, utilizing synths and electric guitar on 40+ charts to capture the 80’s rock feel while maintaining the core intent of Loesser’s compositions and Ginzler’s orchestrations.

I was an orchestrator for the largest student written musical in the country, working with a 12 piece brand to orchestrate golden age, rock and pop inspired numbers. One of my orchestrations from this show won the Bernard and Sally Dobroski Award for best orchestration.
